The blaze was reported just after 1 a.m. in the 12700 block of Sumac Drive. Barbara McClure, 64, died from injuries related to the fire and three other adults who were in the home were hospitalized.
Neighbor Marisela Gonzales was outside, just about ready to leave for work, when she heard a "boom, boom" similar to a gun going off Friday morning.
She went back into her house, and her daughter told her to look out the window toward their backyard. The home on the other side of the fence was on fire.
"I just saw flames high up in the air," Gonzales said.
One of the three adults who were hospitalized had major injuries, Cal Fire Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman said.
Another person who was in the home declined medical treatment.
McClure had initially been pronounced dead at the scene. But she was revived by firefighters and taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Fuhrman said.
Officials are investigating the cause, but it didn't appear to be arson.
The fire appears to have started between the garage and the house, Desert Hot Springs Police Crime Scene Investigator Terry Sherman said at the scene.
